Waste is a rising concern for the entire world. The increase in wealth and the progress in the consumer industry have led to a steady increase in waste. The European Union alone produces 3 billion tonnes of waste a year. That equates to 6 tonnes of solid waste per person annually. Approximately 90 million tonnes of European waste is hazardous. The OECD has estimated that the production of waste could augment by 45% by 2020 compared to 1995 levels. This staggering statistic indicates that Europe could be facing a serious waste crisis by the end of this decade.

Covenant capaCITY Conference
Covenant capaCITY began in June 2011 and is a 3 year project co-funded by the Intelligent Energy Europe Programme. European Mobility Week
The European Mobility Week is the most widespread campaign on sustainable mobility in the world. It takes place annually from the 16th to the 22nd of September. The aim of the campaign is to get local authorities involved in directly encouraging their citizens to make more sustainable transport decisions. The Urban Forum 2012
The European Commission’s recently published proposals for new Regulations in the field of Regional Policy put a strong emphasis on integrated urban development, with a number of important suggestions to ensure that cities play their full role in driving growth in the EU. A key element in these proposals is the Commission’s intention to seek a direct, long-term, interaction between mayors and Commission officials working on their regions at a European level, with the aim of identifying future urban challenges and how they can be tackled successfully at all levels. The Urban Forum will be an opportunity to discuss the new proposals, with a particular focus on the role of cities in promoting sustainable growth.

“Festival for Europe”
Florence, the Tuscan capital is hosting the Festival for Europe from the 6th to 10th May. The four day festival is being organised by the European University Institute, the only academic institution founded by the members of the European Union, which provides an intellectual contribution to the process of European integration. The Festival will include cultural events, and there will be a two day conference on the “State on the Union” on the 9th and 10th May.

Today, It’s Not Easy Being Green is an official event for the Hamburg European Green Capital 2011 program that started March 1st 2011. Over the course of 184 days, Aart and Paula are offering inspiring lectures and materials workshops to explore the practice of sustainability by meeting, discussing and working with local creative youth and professionals.

The European Commission handed over the title of Green Capital from Stockholm to Hamburg at an event in Brussels on the 15th December 2010.

Celebration of Hamburg’s status as Green Capital 2011
The City of Hamburg invites some 500 partners and sponsors to an evening of celebration to mark Hamburg’s status as European Green Capital in 2011. At the event which takes place at the Kampnagel international center for contemporary performing arts, the City of Hamburg will present a preview of upcoming events in relation to the award.
